2/3 Fels-Naptha bar, grated
1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda.
| Laundry soap ingredients with the Fels-Naptha grated. |
Mix with about 10 cups of water & put on the stove to melt all of the ingredients. While all of ingredients are melting fill the five gallon bucket about 1/3 with water. After all the ingredients have melted pour them into the bucket & then fill the remainder of the bucket with water. You may want to move the bucket to its "home" before filling it with the rest of the water because it gets pretty heavy. (I usually make my husband move it for me.) After about 24 hours you will notice your soap has cooled completely & assumed a custard like consistency. Feel free to use it like that, I find it more effective to mix it up to return it to a more liquid state. It is easier to measure & I think it is used more efficiently in my washing machine. Use it as you would your regular detergent.
This recipe was originally designed to be halved & used for three gallon buckets. I didn't have a three gallon bucket but this has worked for us. Since I use it in the more concentrated five gallon bucket & have a high efficiency washer I use a bit less per load depending of course on the load size & how dirty the items are. A little less than 1/2 cup works for me.
This simple recipe lasts months for our family of five. If you want to add some essential oils to the soap you can, I never have. I usually add some essential oil to an old washcloth to put with the clothes in the dryer if I want them to smell pretty especially before I put them into storage bins. A little lemongrass essential oil will help keep bugs at bay.
